Seller Tips: The Essential Checklist To Moving House
Moving home can be a very stressful event in your life. Make this easier on yourself by reading this checklist first! It contains all those little things that you might have forgotten in the excitement and lead up to your big removal day.
Check list for the few days before the removal:
Pack all your valuable items and important documents in a safe and secure place – you want to make sure that the sensitive and high value items are kept with you right up until you move into your new home.- Begin packing separate bags (plastic preferably) with household essentials such as toothbrush, toothpaste, phone charger, cleaning materials, toilet rolls, tool kits, kettle, iron, towels and so forth. These are the items you may use up until the day you actually move, so you need to be able to access them.
- Make sure that your house keys are available to the occupants of your old home (sometimes this is dealt with via your estate agents).
- The same can be said for your new house keys – make sure they are available to your new home on or before the day or arrange for this beforehand.
- Essential security information to be traded or learned for the home such as alarms and relevant security information. Once again, your estate agents can handle the specifics of this.
- Don’t forget to take out the rubbish!
- Leave your old home clean and tidy.
- Defrost your fridge/freezer the night or a few days before you leave – don’t forget to lay towels on the ground to catch the water.
Check list of things to do on removal day:
Label the house keys and any internal keys that are for the new occupants so they know which key opens what door. It’s not a necessity but it is considered a courtesy.- Make sure you have all the essential contact information for your solicitors, estate agents, mortgage advisors, removals team, or anyone who is involved with the process of your home move. This is just in case there are any last-minute dilemmas and or problems.
- Cover yourself in terms of bills by taking note in of your meter readings and when your last call was made. If you have sorted out all the utilities in advance, you shouldn’t have to worry about being charged for any period of time after you have left the property.
- Security check to make sure all the windows in your property are closed up and locked
- Be prepared to change the locks on your new property as you can never be sure who might still have access to it. This can be arranged for on the day or to be carried out within the next few days.
- After the long moving process is done and you are in your new place of residence we recommend you get sit back and relax. You deserve a break!
Good luck moving home!

Good morning, Anita. These are great tips. Moving is one of the most stressful activities, and having a checklist like this really helps eliminate a good amount of stress. Oh yes, and it’s super important to have those essentials in a box or area you can get to right away. I always marked that box separate – FIRST BOX TO OPEN.

Being in the storage business, I would always be asked by my mates, colleagues or immediate family members about tips on moving houses to storage facilities. The ones listed in this article are essentials that should not be overlooked. When I was helping a friend to move over to Sydney and eventually availed of our self storage facility, he did almost exactly the same checklist. He said that after the whole fiasco of not noting down the things he needed to do during his first move, he learned his lesson. Thus, for his 2nd time to move after 10 years, he made a thorough checklist like the one listed.
Dean…as you know, the more planning you can do prior to the move, the better chances of a stress free (or minimal) move you will have.
